(Review) Columbia Pictures’ “Murder Reported,” starring Paul Carpenter and Melissa Stribling, opened yesterday at the ....... Theatre, is a new kind of thriller which parlays a trunkful of murder and a townful of suspects into a screenful of screaming suspense. Reporters Carpenter and Miss Stribling are assigned to the story when their paper is tipped off that a trunk at a small railway station contains a corpse. Their first conclusion that the body is that of a missing local politician goes awry when the corpse turns out to be a woman. But, if this first lead proves inconclusive, other leads eventually turn out to more fruitful. They find themselves hunting for—and being hunted by—‘“the judo killer,’ a clinch-and-kill goon whose caress is his deadliest weapon. Between spells of suspense and action, Carpenter and Miss Stribling find time to discover romance. John Laurie plays a_ bluff. spoken newspaper editor, Peter Swanwick is the tipster who sets off the case and Patrick Holt plays a local reporter. Carpenter and Miss Stribling are seen as reporters covering a murder case in which a woman’s corpse has been found in a trunk. Investigating, Carpenter learns his original assumption, that the body in the trunk is that of a missing politician, is wrong. The corpse is that of a local woman who presumably had been buried after her death from illness sometime earlier. The politician is also dead, however, and his body switched with that of the body in the trunk. Following clue after clue, Carpenter finally comes face-to-face with “the judo killer” responsible for the murder and mystery. Carpenter and Miss Stribling are said to be outstanding in their respective roles as the reporters. Veteran character actor Laurie is excellent as their editor. Swanwick plays the man who tips off their paper that the corpse is in the trunk and Holt is seen as a local reporter. Logically, she should have wound up behind the cameras, instead of in front of them, but it was inevitable that her good looks should lead her to an acting career. Her first stage job after her cutting room days was in repertory where she continued for some years before making her London debut. Her first important film part was in “Out of the Clouds” and, since then, she has appeared in “Decameron Nights,” “Behind the Headlines” and “The Edge of Darkness.” Miss Stribling was born at Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, and her earliest ambition was to become a film actress.
