PUBLICITY ‘Kings Go Forth, Bittersweet Drama of Love, Stars Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood (Advance Production Feature) A poignant love story of two American soldiers for an American girl who lives a lonely life with her widowed mother on the French Riviera during the last days of World War II, is the theme of the Frank Ross production, “Kings Go Forth,” which will open .......... at the ereaciettnts fac Theatre through United Artists release. Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood are co-starred in “Kings Go Forth,” and the supporting cast is headed by Leora Dana, Karl Swenson, Anne Codee and Jackie Berthe. The picture was produced by Frank Ross and directed by Delmer Daves. The screenplay by Merle Miller is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Joe David Brown. Daniel Fapp was chief cinematographer, and the musical score was composed and conducted by Elmer Bernstein. Sinatra, who often kiddingly refers to himself as a “thin singer,” considers his role in “Kings Go Forth” his most exciting and important one since his memorable portrayal of “Maggio” in “From Here to Eternity.” Although he won no Oscars for it, Tony Curtis’ performance as the heel in “Sweet Smell of Success” won him enormous critical acclaim. In “Kings Go Forth” Tony again plays what he calls a “for-real” role, as a draft-dodging, playboy soldier who trifles with the affections of a beautiful girl who has fallen in love with him. Natalie Wood, who has been Hollywood’s epitome of the teen-ager of the Beat Generation, graduates to a new kind of role in “Kings Go Forth.” As Monique, the AmericanFrench girl living in France, she essays her first mature role. “Kings Go Forth” was filmed in part on location in what has been termed “the most beautiful spot in the whole world”—the fabulous Cote D’Azur of France. Starring Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood, as the three principals involved, the picture which tells of two men who fall in love with a girl who is half Negro, is in no sense a preachment, but a warm moving story of two men and a girl; one man genuinely in love, the other is out for what he can get, and the girl unfortunately unable to distinguish between true love and “a good line.” While serving in France (the Riviera) toward the close of World War II, Sinatra and Curtis meet Monique, played by Natalie Wood, whose mother is white and father (who died before the film began) was a Negro. This makes no difference to Sinatra who falls deeply in love with her. Curtis, on the other hand, sees a pretty girl, and a chance for a quick romance (his past life has been one long series of love ’em and leave ’em episodes) and goes on the make in a very “sincere” way. Monique believes him and returns his love. Her bitter disappointment at learning the truth, Sinatra’s reaction, and Curtis’ sowhat attitude, makes “Kings Go Forth,” one of the most bitter-sweet love stories of the screen. Everyone connected with this film deserves top plaudits: producer Frank Ross; director Delmer Daves; _ Merle Miller, for his adaptation of The Story | Joe David Brown’s best-selling novel; and Elmer Bernstein, for his hauntingly melodic musical score. “Tougher They Are, Better | Like Em” (Tony Curtis Feature) Tony Curtis thinks it’s fine to be a “nice guy” but he’d sooner have a tough guy direct him. “T don’t care if a director beats me so long as he gets a performance out of me,” laughed Curtis, who has risen from bobbysox idol to respected dramatic actor in recent years. When, as was his lot in “Kings Go Forth,” the United Artists release, opening ............ at the geste st Theatre, the director happened to combine both personal warmth and cold, solid know-how, the assignment can be a dream. “Delmer Daves is such a guy,” said Curtis. “Let’s face it, movies are largely a director’s medium. If you’re gonna have a director who lets you emote all over the place you might as well direct the picture yourself.” Curtis is one actor who will never direct and produce the films in which he stars. “Tt’s hard enough trying to remember my lines and get the feel of ‘a part without worrying about every other actor in the piece,” is the way Tony Curtis feels about it. _ (Not for Publication) Near the end of World War II our Seventh Army is still fighting Germans in southern France. Lieutenant Sam Loggins (Frank Sinatra) who tells this story, meets and falls in love with Monique Blair (Natalie Wood), a beautiful American girl who lives in Nice with her widowed mother. He asks Monique to marry him, but she refuses. She explains that she is the child of a mixed marriage; her father whom she adored, was a Negro. After the shock Sam goes back to her. They run into Sergeant Britt Harris (Tony 40% Curtis) Sam's radio operator, and the two soldiers become Monique's regular 100% “lm For Real” After several run-ins with the assistant director who mistook him for a costumed extra on the set of “Kings Go Forth,” poignant love drama, opening .......... at the Fe 23 OR Theatre through United Artists release. Army Major Vincent Marcheselli, technical advisor on the Frank Sinatra starrer, showed up for work wearing a badge pinned to his green uniform breast pocket. It read: “Major Vincent Marcheselli, Army Technical Advisor. I’m For Real.” “T got tired of being ordered to report for makeup or told to turn in my uniform at the wardrobe department,” said the much-decorated hero of artillery action in World War II and Korea. Yes, We Have No Bikinis! All the lovely French extras had to take off their bikinis before filming a scene for the Frank-RossEton production “Kings Go Forth,” with Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, and Natalie Wood starred. The script of the United Artists release which opens ........ at the see Theatre, called for Sinatra to visit Nice on leave from his outfit during World War II and see dozens of lovely, shapely girls on the beach in bikinis. But Director Delmer Daves, who is quite hep to what’s what with women’s styles, pointed out that the bikini was not invented until 1948. So, all the lovely French extras had to wear different suits. Summary "Kings Go Forth," startling drama of love and combat in World War Il, stars Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood with Leora Dana. In the supporting cast are Karl Senson, Anne Codee and Jack Berthe. The Frank Ross Comedian’s Home Johnny-On-Spot Becomes Villa Paves The Way For Sinatra Film For Daves’ Success (Production Feature) The opulent French Riviera villa in “Kings Go Forth” has the appearance of belonging to royalty. And so, in a sense, it does. It is the estate in Hollywood of Harold Lloyd, who was at the very least a prince of the blood in the fabulous hierarchy of the great days of the silent films. In the Frank Ross Production of “Kings Go Forth,” which co-stars Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood, and opens on ...... atthe sac a. os Theatre through United Artists release, the Lloyd estate impersonates a very sumptuous French villa—and brings it off in grand style, at that. Lloyd’s magnificent estate, with the feudal grandeur of its lake and gardens, its private golf course and tennis courts, its swimming pool and the forty-room mansion itself, has never before been seen in a movie. It had frequently been sought, but the wealthy Lloyd (he made upwards of $30,000 per week in his long heydey, at a time when the federal income-tax was negligible— and he kept it) had always refused to permit it to be used. But he relented in the case of “Kings Go Forth” because of his old friendship with director Delmer Daves, who wrote the scripts for many of Lloyd’s great comedies. So Daves moved his cameras, crew and cast into the Lloyd estate, and thus for the first time movie audiences throughout the world will see the lovely Italian-style castle atop a tree-lined hill, the lake covered with water-lilies, the private waterfall, the giant fountains, the beautiful English gardens, the priceless works of art hanging on the walls, and the countless other wonders of the Lloyd house and ground. Still KGF-25 If Delmer Daves were ever asked for the formula required to become an outstanding movie director, his answer might be something like this: “Take a three-cent can of smelly salmon, go to college, grow big and heavy, write a college story, do an extremely technical submarine-warfare script mix well, and youre a director.” Daves, one of Hollywood’s top directors, is currently represented on the screen by the Frank Ross Production of “Kings Go Forth,” which co-stars Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood, and opens INE os hed sonsca At, thee jpaiece woes Theatre through United Artists release. An adaptation of Joe David Brown’s best-selling novel of love on the Riviera during World War I, “King Go Forth” was filmed in part on location on the beautiful Cote D’Azur of France. Some thirty years ago, Delmer Daves first set foot inside a movie studio, as a prop boy. In the late afternoon of his first day at work he bought a can of spoiled salmon, and, waving it beneath the nose of a cat, caused said cat to jump off a ledge—something director James Cruze had been attempting to do without success for a whole day. Said Cruze: “Daves, you’re a genius. You're in the movie business for good.” Shortly after the cat-jumping incident, Cruze—one of the great pioneer directors of movies—was assigned to do a college football picture. “Daves,” said Cruze accusingly, “haven't you been to college?” Daves admitted this damaging fact, and Cruze promptly appointed him technical director. Later Daves became an_ actor, then a writer, and then a director. Mat 2G Natalie Wood tells Frank Sinatra why it would not be advisable for them to fall in love.
