‘Calling All Husbands’ Packs Plenty Laughs
A picture with plenty of laughs, love and excitement will make its local bow at the Strand Theatre next Friday when Warner Bros.’ new film, “Calling All Husbands,” opens.
Starring in the picture are George Tobias, Lucile Fairbanks and Ernest Truex. The film tells the story of a meek little man, played by Ernest Truex, whose wife, Florence Bates’ role, is always nagging him. She never fails to remind him that she could have married a_ very wealthy gentleman named Oscar, portrayed by George Tobias. Her other pet dislike is for George Reeves, as the person who marries her daughter, played by Lucile Fairbanks, in spite of her objections.
Oscar turns out to be a crook who unsuccessfully tries to rob a department store and is forced to use Truex’s house as a hideout when the police get hot on his trail. To everyone’s amazement Truex floors him with a wild tackle and prevents him from escaping from the police. His wife is so impressed by his actions that she realizes her past attitude has been unfair and turns over a new leaf. From then on, Ernest gives the orders around the house and his wife becomes the meek one.
“Calling All Husbands” is a comedy that will be enjoyed by the whole family, from Junior to Grandpa. Robert E. Kent adapted the film from a play by Martin Flavin. Advance reports have it that Director Noel Smith did a great job in playing up the humor and romance to its full worth.
